Why the right housing matters

I had the privilege of living with a lady called Joyce for five years. She’d spent most of her life in institutions, where people had to check on her all the time. When she first moved into a home, she kept her bedroom door open because she thought someone needed to observe her. I kept telling her, ‘You can close your door now. You’re in your own home.’ It took time, but one day she started slamming the door because she realised she was in control. We’ve never painted over the crack in that door. It reminds me how powerful it is when someone finally has a home of their own

Journeys of Change

The right home
can literally change lives.

Many people who were previously considered unable to live independently have successfully moved into supported housing and built stable, fulfilling lives. When housing and care work together, people can move from institutional settings into homes where they feel safe, valued, and in control of their lives.
